What is FileFlip.no?

FileFlip.no is a free collection of PDF and file conversion tools that run entirely inside your web browser. We offer eight tools covering the most common PDF tasks: converting to and from Word documents, turning PDF pages into images, combining images into PDFs, merging and splitting files, compressing large files, and extracting text content.

Unlike most online file tools, FileFlip.no never sends your files to a server. Every conversion, every extraction, every compression — all of it runs using JavaScript directly on your device. Your documents stay on your device from start to finish. When you close the browser tab, even the temporary browser memory used during processing is cleared automatically.

How the technology works

FileFlip.no tools are powered by well-established open-source JavaScript libraries that run natively in modern web browsers:

• PDF.js — Mozilla's open-source PDF rendering library, the same engine that powers Firefox's built-in PDF viewer. Used for rendering pages to canvas and extracting text content.
• pdf-lib — A JavaScript library for creating and modifying PDF documents from scratch. Used for merging, splitting, compressing, and building PDFs from images.
• docx.js — A library for generating .docx Word documents in JavaScript. Used by the PDF to Word tool to build the output document.
• mammoth.js — A library for converting .docx files to HTML. Used by the Word to PDF tool to render the document for browser-based PDF export.

Because these libraries execute locally in your browser, no server infrastructure is needed for file processing. This is what makes the privacy guarantee technically enforceable — not just a policy, but a structural feature of how the tools are built.

Our privacy commitment

Your files are 100% private. When you select a PDF or image in any FileFlip.no tool, the file is loaded directly into your browser's memory using the standard JavaScript File API. It is never transmitted over the internet to any server, never stored in any database, and never seen by anyone — not even us.

This is not merely a privacy policy statement. The tool code has no file upload functionality. There are no server endpoints that accept file data. Even if you wanted to send us your files, the architecture makes it technically impossible. The only outbound network requests the tools make are to load the JavaScript libraries from public CDNs — your file data is never part of any request.

We use standard anonymous analytics (page view counts and tool usage frequency) to understand which tools are most useful and where to focus improvements. This data is aggregated and contains no personally identifying information.

Why is it free?

FileFlip.no is supported by advertising revenue through Google AdSense. Ads appear in fixed positions on each page — typically above the tool area, beside the options panel, and below the download button. They are standard display ads — never full-screen takeovers, never pop-ups, never interstitials, and never positioned to interfere with using the tool.

Advertising revenue covers the costs of hosting, the domain, and development time. In exchange, every tool is completely free with no hidden fees, no file size paywalls, no account requirements, and no watermarks on any output file. We believe that access to professional-quality document tools should not require a monthly subscription.

Who built FileFlip.no?

FileFlip.no is an independent project built by developers who were tired of the existing landscape of online PDF tools. Most such tools either require a paid subscription for basic features, force you to create an account, upload sensitive documents to unknown servers without clear privacy policies, show intrusive ads that block the tool before you can use it, or limit free use to a handful of conversions per day.

We wanted a tool that works immediately, does not require any personal information, processes files privately, and does not hold functionality hostage behind a subscription. So we built one. FileFlip.no is the result — and we use it ourselves regularly.

Our tools

• PDF to Word — Extract text from a PDF and rebuild it as an editable .docx Word document. Best for text-based PDFs: contracts, reports, letters, articles.
• Word to PDF — Convert a .docx document to PDF using your browser's native print-to-PDF engine. Preserves formatting for sharing and submission.
• PDF to JPG — Render each PDF page as a JPG or PNG image at 72, 150, or 300 DPI. Download individually or as a ZIP archive.
• JPG to PDF — Combine JPG, PNG, and WebP images into a single PDF. Drag to reorder pages, choose page size and margins.
• Merge PDF — Combine multiple PDF files into one document. Reorder files by dragging before merging. No quality loss.
• Split PDF — Extract specific pages, split by ranges, or separate every page into its own file. Visual thumbnails show each page before you extract.
• Compress PDF — Reduce PDF file size with three compression levels (Strong / Balanced / Light). Shows size comparison before downloading.
• PDF to Text — Extract all readable text from a text-based PDF. Edit output directly, copy to clipboard, or download as .txt or .md.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything? No. All tools run directly in your web browser. No software installation, no browser extension, and no plugin is required. FileFlip.no works in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and any other modern browser.

Do the tools work on mobile? Yes. The tools work on smartphones and tablets. However, processing large files on mobile may be slower due to less available memory and processing power compared to desktop devices.

Is there a file size limit? Each file must be under 50MB. This limit exists because processing happens in the browser — very large files can exhaust available browser memory on low-spec devices.

Why is there an advertisement on the page? Advertising revenue is what allows us to offer all tools completely free. We have positioned ads to be as unobtrusive as possible — they do not block the tool, appear before you can use it, or require you to dismiss them.
